PROVIDENCE, R.I. (March 26, 2012) – Senior third baseman Patrick Kivlehan (West Nyack, N.Y.), who batted .692 (9-13) with two home runs and seven RBIs in four games, has been named the BIG EAST Player of the Week, the conference office announced Monday. He reached base in 12-of-15 plate appearances in the series win at conference rival Seton Hall over the weekend.

He is also the winner of the New Jersey Collegiate Baseball Association (NJCBA) Division I Player of the Week.

The former Rutgers football player, who is playing baseball for the first time since high school, broke through with an impressive week to help lead RU to a 3-1 record. He cranked his first career home run, a three-run shot, against Rider in a midweek game to extend the lead to 5-0 in the fifth inning of the home opener at Bainton Field.

Against the Pirates, Kivlehan picked up seven hits in 10 at bats from the cleanup spot to ignite the offensive attack. In the finale, the third baseman reached base all five times, including a long two-run homer to one of the deepest parts of Owen T. Carroll Field to cap a six-run second inning.

Kivlehan also walked four times and was hit by a pitch twice to put up a .789 on-base percentage for the week, while stealing two bases in three attempts. At the hot corner, he made several diving plays in addition to an off-balanced bare-handed play on a bunt to put out a speedy runner at first.

For the season, Kivlehan leads the team with a .421 batting average, .500 on-base percentage and .614 slugging percentage in 16 games. He has 10 multiple-hit contests and is currently riding an eight-game hitting streak, having at least two knocks in the last six games.

Kivlehan becomes the first Scarlet Knight to win BIG EAST Player of the Week since Pat Biserta took the honor on April 19, 2010. This is the second-straight week that RU has won one of the two major conference weekly awards, as junior Rob Corsi (Oceanport, N.J.) earned BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week on March 19.

Rutgers (11-10, 2-1) returns to Bainton Field for a game against Wagner on Wednesday, March 28 at 3 p.m., before continuing BIG EAST play at Georgetown over the weekend.
