The Rutgers baseball program will hold a winter pitchers/catchers camp from January 12-13 in the Rutgers Practice Bubble.
This two-day camp will focus on the pitcher and catcher battery. Pitchers will work primarily on proper throwing mechanics, and will also learn how to increase arm strength in order to gain both velocity and movement on pitches. Catchers will concentrate on their receiving mechanics, as well as correct throwing and blocking techniques. The two will combine each day, and put everything together in supervised bullpen sessions.
The clinic will run from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. each day, with participants having the opportunity to receive instruction from legendary head coach Fred Hill, as well as former Rutgers pitcher and current assistant coach Casey Gaynor and former RU catcher and current volunteer assistant coach Tim Reilly.
Former All-American Glen Gardner and associate head coach Joe Litterio will also be in attendance. All four of the assistants played under Hill at Rutgers. Each player will go through numerous drills and informational stations aimed to develop personal skills. Proper mechanics will be demonstrated, strategy will be discussed and numerous repetitions will be practiced.
The camp is open to players currently in grades 8-12, and will include individual instruction along with advice. Hill, who enters his 30th year at the helm of the Rutgers program in 2013, has seen 43 of his players move on to professional baseball since 1998. The veteran mentor became the 16th active Division I head coach to earn 1,000 victories, achieving the prestigious feat during the 2010 season.
The Rutgers Indoor Practice and Conditioning Facility, commonly referred to as “the Bubble,” is located across from High Point Solutions Stadium on the Busch Campus. Measuring 430 x 230 feet in length, it reaches 80 feet at its highest point. In August 2003, a new FieldTurf surface was installed.
