PROVIDENCE, R.I. (February 12, 2013) – Senior Jeff Melillo (Annandale, N.J.) of the Rutgers baseball team has earned a 2012-13 American Eagle Outfitters BIG EAST Institutional Scholar-Athlete Award, the Conference’s Academic Affairs Committee announced Tuesday. He is one of 14 males from across the league to receive the honor.
A finance major, Melillo has been named to the Dean’s List every semester since 2010 and maintains a 3.62 GPA. He is a member of the National College Athlete Honor Society and the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee at Rutgers. Melillo has won the Ron Kish Academic Excellence Award the past two seasons, having the highest GPA on the baseball team.
Also heavily involved in the community, the senior catcher participated in the program “Basebald” over the summer. The initiative involves players shaving their heads to help raise money for the St. Baldrick’s Children Research Center.
Melillo was named First Team All-BIG EAST last season after hitting .311 with four home runs, while catching 19 runners stealing. He was the batting champion (.404) in the New England College Baseball League over the summer and a Preseason All-BIG EAST selection this season.
Rutgers opens the year with a three-game series at Miami (FL) starting Friday at 7 p.m.
