CORAL GABLES, Fla. (February 16, 2013) – Rutgers baseball dropped the second game of a doubleheader versus No. 28 Miami, 4-1, Saturday at Alex Rodriguez Park. Sophomore Vinny Zarrillo (Forked River, N.J) had two hits for the Scarlet Knights to bring his total to five for the day.
Miami (2-0) came out swinging in the bottom of the first with two runs on four hits. The first two runners reached base, but were each caught stealing by senior catcher Jeff Melillo (Annandale, N.J.). However, UM followed with two doubles and a triple to take a 2-0 lead after one.
Rutgers (0-2) cut the deficit in half in the fifth after Zarrillo doubled down the right field line to start the inning. Junior Pat Sweeney (Sparta, N.J.) then laid down a sacrifice bunt to move him up to third. The outfielder scored one batter later on a passed ball.
The Canes then tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the fifth and sixth to go up 4-1, which proved to be the final score.
Senior Tyler Gebler (Toms River, N.J.) (0-1) took the loss for RU, but settled in after the first to pitch five innings. Miami starter Javi Salas (1-0) did not allow an earned run in six innings for the win, while Thomas Woodrey picked up the save with a scoreless seventh.
Due to it being a non-conference doubleheader, the nightcap was scheduled for seven innings.
RU will look to salvage the final game of the series Sunday at 1 p.m. Senior Charlie Law (Mainland, N.J.) will make his first start on the mound since 2009 for the Scarlet Knights.
