PROVIDENCE, R.I. (April 1, 2013) – After tossing a three-hit shutout at Villanova Saturday, the conference office has named senior right-hander Tyler Gebler (Toms River, N.J.) the BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week. Junior Nick Favatella (Washington Township, N.J.) also picked up a spot on the Weekly Honor Roll.
Gebler shined in his sixth career complete game, allowing just three hits and nothing else in a two-hour masterpiece. He tied his career high with eight strikeouts and did not permit a walk or hit a batter, facing three over the minimum. The veteran improved his record to 3-0 against Villanova, giving up just five earned runs in 27.1 innings (1.65 ERA).
Through two BIG EAST starts, Gebler has allowed just one earned run in 15.2 innings for a 0.57 ERA. He is sixth in the conference with 46.1 innings pitched in seven outings.
The senior is the second Scarlet Knight to earn the honor this season, joining classmate Rob Smorol (Clark, N.J.). RU starters have worked to a 1.42 ERA in six BIG EAST games so far.
Favatella went 7-for-13 (.538) with five runs and four RBIs in the three-game sweep of the Wildcats. He had two three-hit games in the series and has now started the last 109 games dating back to his freshman season. In nine career games against the Wildcats, he is batting .459 (17-for-37) with 12 RBIs.
Rutgers (11-12, 5-1 BIG EAST) will open up its home slate Tuesday against Columbia at Bainton Field at 3:30 p.m. The next conference series will begin Friday versus rival Seton Hall.
