PROVIDENCE, R.I. (May 20, 2013) – Sophomore outfielder Vinny Zarrillo (Forked River, N.J.) of the Rutgers baseball picked up a spot on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll, the league office announced Monday. He went 8-for-13 in the series at USF to lock down the conference batting at .407 for the BIG EAST season.
It is the first career conference recognition for the sophomore, who was named NJCBA First Team All-State last week.
Zarrillo, who leads RU with a .346 average for the season, started off the series going 4-for-5 with two doubles and an RBI. Then after collecting a knock in the middle game, the left-handed hitter picked up three hits in the finale victory, including a three-run double into the left field corner to break the game open. He additionally stole a pair of bases and is tied for the team lead with 12 for the year.
Zarrillo becomes the second straight BIG EAST batting champion from the Scarlet Knights and third in four years. The outfielder also recorded a .476 on base percentage in conference games. Patrick Kivlehan (.402) took the batting title last year, with Steve Nyisztor (.434) winning in 2010.
Rutgers will next open up play in the BIG EAST Championships against USF Wednesday at 8 p.m. on ESPN3. The tournament is being held at Bright House Field in Clearwater, Fla.
