  • PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Dec. 23, 2013) – Rutgers baseball junior outfielder Vinny Zarrillo (Forked River, N.J.) was named to the Preseason All-American Athletic Conference Team in a vote of the league’s head coaches. Zarrillo won the 2013 BIG EAST batting title after hitting .407 in league games.

In addition, the Scarlet Knights were projected to finish seventh in the league’s 2014 Preseason Coaches’ Poll. RU was picked eighth last season and ended up finishing fifth in the conference standings.

Keeping his batting average over .320 all season, Zarrillo emerged as a threat in the Rutgers lineup in 2013. He tied the team lead with a .330 overall average and 12 stolen bases, playing in 57 of the team’s 58 games.

Zarrillo became the third Scarlet Knight in four years to win the league batting title, also collecting a .476 on-base and .560 slugging percentage against conference opponents. He ended the regular season with eight hits in a three-game series at USF and went 2-for-3 with an RBI and walk to help avoid elimination at the BIG EAST Championships against top-seeded Louisville. Zarrillo started the year picking up six hits in a series at Miami (FL). Click here to view his full biography.

The preseason poll and all-conference team was selected by a vote of the league’s nine head coaches, who were not allow to include their own team or players. The nine teams set to play in the American Athletic Conference in 2014 are UCF, Cincinnati, UConn, Houston, Louisville, Memphis, Rutgers, USF and Temple. Rutgers will begin its 2014 season Feb. 14 at FIU.
