PISCATAWAY, N.J. (April 17, 2014) – Senior Lou Clemente (Union, N.J.) blasted a three-run home run and sophomore Howie Brey (Middletown, N.J.) pitched a career-long 7.1 innings to lift Rutgers baseball to a 5-4 win in the series opener versus Cincinnati Thursday at Bainton Field. It was the eighth victory for the Scarlet Knights in the last 10 games versus the Bearcats.

Brey (4-1) scattered 10 hits and permitted four runs, but stranded four runners in scoring position to prevent a major rally. The left-hander did not walk a batter and induced 11 outs in the air in the 101-pitch outing. Redshirt freshman Max Herrmann (Rutherford, N.J.) entered from the bullpen in the eighth and pitched the final 1.2 innings to earn his second save. He now leads the team with 14 appearances for the season.

Freshman Mike Carter (Bloomfield, N.J.) sparked the offense once again with three hits and two runs from the leadoff spot. He now has seven hits in his last nine at bats to raise his season average to a .336. Junior Vinny Zarrillo (Forked River, N.J.) also reached twice on walks Thursday for RU (16-18, 4-5)

Each team plated a run on a sacrifice fly in the first inning to start the game. Cincinnati put the first two on with a single and double before Justin Glass lifted a scoring fly ball to right field. Following that, UC tried to add another on a pop to left, but Zarrillo gunned a strong throw to home that deflected off sophomore catcher R.J. Devish (Beachwood, N.J.) for Brey to gather and make the tag. In the bottom of the inning, Carter singled, moved up to second on a balk and to third on a passed ball. Senior Nick Favatella (Washington Township, N.J.) next lifted a deep enough fly ball to right to even the game.

Brey and UC starter Ryan Atkinson settled in from there until the Bearcats put together two runs in the fifth. A safety squeeze by Ryan Quinn put Cincinnati up 3-2 and Glass lifted another sacrifice fly to give the visitors a two-run lead.

However, RU bounced back in the bottom of the sixth. Carter singled to lead off and Zarrillo walked with two outs to bring Clemente up. The designated hitter fell behind 1-2 in the count before belting a shot over the wall in right field for his second home run of the season, giving the Scarlet Knights a 4-3 advantage.

Carter came through with a two-out RBI single in the seventh to pad the lead, scoring Sweeney. The shortstop had beat out an infield single to reach with one out and moved up to second on a groundout.

Glass stole home with two outs in the eighth to cut it to a one-run game. Herrmann retired the first two batters in the ninth before two singles put the tying and go-ahead runners on base. However, the left-hander buckled down and induced a grounder to first base to seal the fourth win in five games for Rutgers.

Atkinson (4-3) took the loss for the Bearcats with four earned runs allowed over 6.1 innings. Quinn led all hitters with four hits on the day.

RU will look to clinch the series in game two Friday at 1 p.m. at Bainton Field. Freshman Gaby Rosa (Perth Amboy, N.J.) will make the start for the Scarlet Knights.
