  • MIAMI, FL – With two on and two outs in the top of the ninth, a fly ball from Dave Williams (Franklin, NJ) fell just shy of the left field wall as Rutgers dropped a frustrating, 9-7 contest to Florida International tonight in Miami. With the score tied at 5-5 in the seventh, Nick Cadena drilled a two-run homer to to put FIU ahead, as the Golden Panthers scored twice in each of their final two at bats before holding off the Scarlet Knights in the ninth. With the loss, RU falls to 5-4, while FIU improves to 15-5.

Trailing 3-1 in the top of the third, the Scarlet Knights rallied for three runs to take a 4-3 lead. Jeff Grose (Iselin, NJ) started the rally with a one-out walk and moved over to second when Colin Gaynor (Toms River, NJ) singled to right-center. Rich Canuso (Monroe, NJ) was then hit by a pitch, loading the bases for Johnny Defendis (Staten Island, NY), who lofted a sacrifice fly to left to score Grose. With two away, Williams drilled a line drive off the fence in right center, scoring both Gaynor and Canuso, while Williams was gunned down trying to stretch a triple into an inside-the-park home run.

Rutgers added another run in the top of the fifth when Todd Frazier (Toms River, NJ) opened with a walk, stole second and scored on a throwing error on the play to take a 5-3 lead. FIU, however, came storming right back in the bottom of the inning, scoring twice against RU starter Aaron Kalb (Middletown, NJ) to tie the game at 5-5.

Reliever Sean Spicer (Pearl River, NJ) kept the Golden Panthers in check in the sixth inning, but allowed Cadena’s two-run blast in the seventh, giving FIU a 7-5 lead. After squandering a pair of scoring opportunities in the seventh, Rutgers cut the gap to 7-6 in the top of the eighth when Canuso was hit by a pitch for the second time in the game to open the inning and Donny Callahan (Sparta, NJ), pinch-running for Canuso, scored on an infield groundout. The Scarlet Knights threatened for more when a line drive from pinch-hitter Ryan Hill (Hillsdale, NJ) fell just inches foul with runners on second and third and two outs. FIU reliever Danny Hernandez bounced back to strike out Hill to end the inning and watched his teammates add two key insurance runs in the bottom of the inning against RU reliever Ryan Bradley (Overland Park, KS) to seal the win.

Spicer (0-1) suffered his first loss of the year, allowing two runs in 2.2 innings of work in relief of Kalb (4.1 IP, 7 H, 5 R). Gaynor and Williams led the way with two hits apiece, while Williams and Defendis each knocked in a pair of runs. FIU out-hit Rutgers, 12-9.

The two teams will meet again on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
