  • PISCATAWAY, NJ – Junior Jim Jansen (Hillsdale, NJ) fired a complete-game five-hitter and freshman shortstop Todd Frazier (Toms River, NJ) was 4-for-4, including a triple and a pair of RBI to lead Rutgers (18-11) past Columbia, 9-2, this afternoon at the Class of ’53 Baseball Complex. RU scored four in the first inning, highlighted by a two-run single from Johnny Defendis (Staten Island, NY) en route to the win.

Frazier led off the bottom of the first with a single through the left side and Jeff Grose (Iselin, NJ) followed with a bunt single that rolled to a stop just inside the third-base line. Colin Gaynor (Toms River, NJ) and Steve Hook (Langhorne, PA) then walked, forcing in the game’s first run, and Defendis ripped a single to center, scoring two more for a 3-0 lead. Cory Rodriguez (Bridgewater, NJ) then delivered a sacrifice fly to left for the inning’s final run.

RU added another run in the fourth when Rodriguez led off with a single and scored on a sharp single to center from Frank Meade (Linden, NJ). RU and Columbia then exchanged single runs in the fifth and sixth innings, with Gaynor singling home Frazier in the fifth and Frazier plating Ryan Hill (Hillsdale, NJ), who had tripled, in the sixth. RU then scored two more in the eighth to close the game on Meade’s infield groundout and Frazier’s triple to right, his fourth hit of the afternoon.

Jansen (2-1) was nicked for an unearned run in the fifth and an earned run in the sixth, but was near-perfect otherwise, allowing just five hits and one walk, while striking out five. Grose finished 2-for-4, while Defendis and Meade knocked in a pair of runs for the Scarlet Knights. The four-hit effort was the first of Frazier’s career.

RU returns to action tomorrow, when it travels to Rider for a 3:00 p.m. game at Sonny Pittaro Field. RU defeated Rider, 11-2, last week in Piscataway.
