PISCATAWAY, NJ – With Mark Lampariello (Annondale, NJ) making his first start, the Scarlet Knights provided him with their season’s best offensive performance in a 21-2 victory over Monmouth this afternoon. Lampariello allowed just four hits and one run in 6.0 innings of work to pick up his first collegiate win, while Johnny Defendis (Staten Island, NY) drove in five runs and Dave Williams (Franklin Twp., NJ) drove in four and hit two home runs to lead the offense. With the win, RU is now 27-18 overall and has won four straight games.

Rutgers scored in every inning, including multi-run efforts in the first (2), second (3), fourth (4), sixth (5) and seventh (4). A leadoff double from Todd Frazier (Toms River, NJ), who reached in all five of his plate appearances and finished 3-for-3, and a single from Jeff Grose (Iselin, NJ), who was 4-for-4, got things rolling for Rutgers with runners at the corners and no outs in the first. Colin Gaynor (Toms River, NJ) drove in Frazier with a single to right and Defendis’ sacrifice fly scored Grose for a 2-0 lead. In the second, Jon Gossard (Harrington Park, NJ) hit his third home run of the season, a solo blast with one out, and Tim Querns (Cherry Hill, NJ) followed him with a double, later scoring on Grose’s RBI single while another Defendis sacrifice fly scored Frazier (walk) for a 5-0 lead.

The scoring continued with four runs in the third, highlighted by Defendis’ two-run single, while single runs scored in the fourth and fifth innings. Five more crossed in the sixth, aided by Williams’ two-run home run to left and Gaynor’s two-run double, for a 16-1 lead and four more scored in the seventh as Williams drilled his second home run of the afternoon, this time to center. Donny Callahan (Sparta, NJ), who picked up his first collegiate hit in the seventh, doubled home the game’s final run in the eighth. He finished 2-for-2 with two doubles.

Lampariello allowed a leadoff single and a two-out walk in the first, but used a groundout to get out of trouble. From there, he cruised through the next four innings before a pair of walks, a hit batter and a single put Monmouth on the scoreboard in the sixth.

Eight of RU’s nine starters had at least one hit and seven had at least two; the lone starter without a hit was senior Cory Rodriguez (Bridgewater, NJ), who saw his 18-game hitting streak come to an end. Frazier (3-for-3, 4 runs, RBI) and Grose (4-for-4, 2 runs, 2 RBI) spearheaded the effort from the top of the order, while the 3-4 hitters, Gaynor and Defendis, combined to drive in eight runs. Gossard was 2-for-3 with 3 RBI from the eighth spot in the order while Williams was 3-for-5 with four runs and four RBI.

Rutgers returns to action on Saturday, when it travels to Bethesda, MD for the first of three BIG EAST games with the Georgetown Hoyas. RU will play a single game on Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. and a doubleheader on Sunday starting at noon.
