  • LYNCHBURG, VA  - The Rutgers baseball team exploded for four home runs, including two by sophomore Frank Meade (Linden, NJ), to earn a 7-2 victory over Liberty, Friday afternoon at Worthington Stadium in Lynchburg, VA. The victory ends the Scarlet Knights’ (4-9) nine-game losing streak, while snapping the Flames’ (16-4) nine-game winning streak.

Meade hit solo home runs to lead off the second and fourth inning, clearing the fence at Worthington Stadium by a great distance each time. Meade, the Scarlet Knights’ catcher has hit four home runs in his last three games and leads the team with six overall on the season. Sophomore Todd Frazier (Toms River, NJ) and freshman Luis Feliz (New Brunswick, NJ) each hit their second home runs of the season for the Scarlet Knights on Friday.

Liberty countered Meade’s solo home run in the second inning with two runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 2-1 lead. The Flames loaded the bases with one out, scoring their first run on a single before drawing a bases-loaded walk. Rutgers starter Steve Holt (Toms River, NJ) worked out of the jam, getting Liberty to hit into an inning-ending double-play.

Liberty’s only error of the game cost the Flames a run as Vic Cegles (Phoenix, AZ) reached on a two-out error by the third baseman to extend the inning. RU capitalized as Frazier found the gap in right center for an RBI double, scoring Cegles.

Meade’s second home run of the game brought home the first of two Scarlet Knight runs in the fourth inning as Rutgers opened a 4-2 lead on Liberty. Senior Steve Hook (Langhorne, PA) followed with a double down the right field line and came around to score two plays later.

Rutgers tacked on a fifth run on Frazier’s opposite-field blast in the fifth. The Scarlet Knights added another run in the sixth as junior Mike Bionde (Pompton Plains, NJ) reached base on an infield single with two outs, stole second and scored on Jeff Grose’s (Iselin, NJ) single up the middle.

Liberty loaded the bases without registering an out in the sixth, but Holt got out of the inning unscathed inducing a pop out to third base in foul territory, a strike out and a ground out to second base. With a 6-2 lead, Holt handed the ball to reliever Joe Baione (Staten Island, NY) to start the seventh. Holt (2-2) worked six strong innings to earn the victory, surrendering just two runs on six hits with a pair of strikeouts.

Baione was nearly perfect in the final three innings, giving up just one hit with a strike out to earn his first career save.

Feliz homered to left field to produce the Scarlet Knights’ final run of the game, making it 7-2.

Liberty starter Ryan Page was tagged with six runs (five earned) on nine hits in six innings as the Scarlet Knights handed Page (5-1) his first loss of the season.

The Scarlet Knights had 12 hits for the second time in the past three games, led by Frazier’s 3-for-5 effort from the plate. Grose and Meade also collected multiple hits for RU.

Rutgers and Liberty will meet again tomorrow at 1 p.m. at Worthington Stadium.
