  • LYNCHBURG, VA - Liberty used a four-run seventh inning to earn a 5-3 come-from-behind victory over the Rutgers baseball team Saturday afternoon at Worthington Stadium in Lynchburg, VA. The Scarlet Knights drop to 4-10 on the season, while the Flames improve to 17-4.

Rutgers scored a run in each of the first two innings to open a 2-0 lead. In the first, leadoff hitter Jeff Grose (Iselin, NJ) drew a walk before designated hitter Tom Edwards (West Caldwell, NJ), who finished 3-for-5 on the day, wrapped a single to left field to move Grose to third where he came around to score on the next play. Freshman Luis Feliz (New Brunswick, NJ) hit a seeing-eye single to right field to open the second inning and was sacrificed over where junior Mike Bionde (Pompton Plains, NJ) brought him home with a double to the gap in left center.

Liberty got its first run in the third inning as Aaron Grijalva drew a two-out walk, stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch where Phillip Laurent doubled to right center to bring him home.

After three scoreless innings, Grose gave Rutgers its third run of the game in the seventh inning with a single to right field, scoring Feliz (single) from second base to make it 3-1.

Rutgers starter Matt Giannini (Watchung, NJ) worked six strong innings before running into trouble in the bottom of the seventh. Reliever Chris Lillis (Fair Haven, NJ) was brought in after Giannini gave up three hits and a run to start the seventh. With runners on first and second, Liberty attempted to sacrifice both runners over, but Lillis fielded the bunt attempt perfectly to get the lead runner out at third base. After inducing a fly out for the second out of the inning, lefty Joe Baione (Staten Island, NY), who worked the final three innings to earn the save in Friday’s win, came in to face the left-handed batter. The hitter gave Liberty its first lead of the game (4-3) with a double to left center field to score a pair of runs for the Flames. Liberty’s P.K. Keller followed with a double to center field off new pitcher Tim Woodhull (Princeton Junction, NJ) to add a fourth run in the inning, giving the Flames a 5-3 lead.

Rutgers threatened in the eighth but stranded runners on second and third. The Scarlet Knights then mounted a final comeback in the ninth with three two-out hits to load the bases, but a pop out to shortstop ended the game, giving newly-inserted Phillip Thompson his fourth save of the season.

Giannini suffered his fourth loss of the season despite an effective performance, giving up four runs on eight hits in six innings with three strikeouts. Liberty’s Dane Beakler got the win, allowing three runs (two earned) on seven hits with a pair of strikeouts in seven innings.

Saturday marked the first time in seven games and just the third time in 14 games overall this season, Rutgers did not produce a home run.

Rutgers and Liberty will meet in the rubber game on Sunday at noon.
