Tortola, British Virgin Islands – Rutgers rising junior Mike Coburn (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) scored 11 points to help Jamaica to a 77-73 victory over the Bahamas Wednesday at the Caribbean Basketball Championships. Five players scored in double figures for Jamaica, which evened its record to 1-1 at the Championships after a loss to Trinidad & Tobago on Tuesday.
Coburn started at guard for Jamaica and logged 22 minutes. He shot three-of-five from the field, five-of-six from the free throw line, and dished-out a pair of assists.
Jamaica jumped-out to a 19-14 first quarter lead but surrendered 30 points in the second stanza to trail 44-37 at the midpoint. The team made up some ground in the third, but trailed 60-56 entering the fourth quarter. Jamaica continually chipped away and evened the scores at 60-60 on a Weyinmi Efejuku free throw with 6:27 remaining. Kimani Ffriend put Jamaica on top for good (62-60), as the team secured victory in methodic fashion.
Alonzo Hinds led the Bahamas (1-1) with a game-high 27 points.
Jamaica plays Barbados Thursday in its final group game. BOX SCORE
