Jamaica Defeats Cuba in Overtime

TORTOLA, British Virgin Islands – Rutgers rising junior guard Mike Coburn (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) helped Jamaica to a 98-93 overtime victory over Cuba Friday evening at the Caribbean Basketball Championships. With the victory, Jamaica improves to 3-1 at the Championships and earned one of the three berths to the Centrobasket Tournament.

Cuba jumped-out to a 26-17 first quarter lead. Behind 12 second stanza points by Weyinmi Efejuku, Jamaica closed and entered the locker room at the midpoint facing a slim 40-38 deficit. Later, down 51-47 in the third quarter, Jamaica went on a 16-0 run to take a 63-51 advantage.

Cuba stormed back to regain the lead in the final stanza, but Jamaica forced the overtime. In the extra column, the Jamaicans out-scored their foes by an 11-6 margin to earn the win.

Efejuku posted 32 points to pace five Jamaicans in double figures for a third straight game.

Jamaica plays its fifth and final game of the tournament Saturday versus the host British Virgin Islands (3-1) to determine gold status. BOX SCORE
