Team JamaicaTORTOLA, British Virgin Islands – Rutgers rising junior guard Mike Coburn (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) played 15 minutes, grabbing three rebounds and scoring two points, to help Jamaica to a 65-61 victory over the British Virgin Islands Saturday evening at the Caribbean Basketball Championships. Jamaica, which already earned a berth to the Centrobasket Tournament with its semifinal win over Cuba, captured the CBC gold medal with victory over BVI and concluded the event with four consecutive wins and a 4-1 record.

Jamaica used its strength in the paint to open up a 20-10 first quarter lead. Jamaica maintained a double digit advantage for most of the second quarter and entered the locker room at halftime ahead by a 37-21 margin.

BVI stayed in the game during the second half by out-scoring their foes 19-12 in the third stanza to produce a 49-40 score at the onset of the fourth quarter. Jamaica held off the tournament hosts down the stretch. Weyinmi Efejuku converted a pair of free throws with six seconds remaining to provide Jamaica a four point lead and to secure the win.

Jamaica shot 20-of-59 (33.8 percent) overall from the field, while BVI made 24-of-61 (39.3 percent) shots. BVI concluded the contest with a 34-27 rebounding advantage. Three Jamaican players posted double digits, while BVI’s Kennedy Bass led all scorers with 19 points. BOX SCORE
