PISCATAWAY, N.J. (November 13, 2009) - Rutgers men’s basketball coach Fred Hill announced today that guard Austin Carroll (Bedford, Mass.) has signed a National Letter of Intent to compete for the Scarlet Knights. An NBA Players Association Top 100 camp participant and Bob Gibbons All-Tournament of Champions choice, Carroll is currently a post-graduate student at Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire.
“Austin has been raised on the sport of basketball and will be a tremendous addition to our program,” said Hill. “He definitely meets the definition of student-athlete, as he excels both on the court and in the classroom. Austin has impressive range on his jumper and excels as a spot up shooter. He is the type of player who makes those around him better.”
A three-time New England Top 75 Showcase selection, Carroll (6-3, 195) is a 2009 graduate of Worcester (Mass.) Academy, where he served as team captain as a senior under head coach Ed Reilly. He was also An All-New England Preparatory School Council selection and McDonald’s All-America nominee for the Hilltoppers. A strong student, he was recognized on the honor roll in each of his semesters at Worcester.
At Brewster, Carroll plays under head coach Jason Smith, who has sent 63 student-athletes to NCAA Division I programs over the past nine years.
On the Amateur Athletic Union circuit, Carroll competes for the New England Playaz under the coaching tutelage of his father John. The team has posted a 60-10 record over the past two summers and finished as the runner up at the prestigious Adidas Super 64 Tournament this past July in Las Vegas. Carroll previously played for the Boston Amateur Basketball Club (BABC) and was a member of the 15-and-under national championship team that also featured current Connecticut freshmen Jamal Coombs-McDaniel and Alex Oriakhi.
Carroll is the son of former Boston Celtics (2004) and Duquesne University (1989-95) head coach John Carroll, who also served as an assistant coach for seven years at Seton Hall under P.J. Carlesimo.
