Ronald HugheyRonald Hughey joins the Rutgers women’s basketball program this season as an assistant coach. Energetic and enthusiastic, Hughey will play a role in recruiting efforts, as well as focusing on post play during the season.

Hughey comes to Rutgers from the University of Central Florida, where he served as the recruiting coordinator for the Knights. Working alongside former Scarlet Knight guard Courtney Locke (Rutgers, ’06), the Columbia, S.C. native helped sign Gevenia Carter, ranked 61st in the 2009 class according to ESPN’s Hoopgurlz. Carter was the first top-100 prospect for the UCF program and the lone early commitment in the Top-100 to sign with a Conference USA institution.

Hughey also helped the Golden Knights win their first Conference USA title in 2009. Ranked No. 5 in the conference, UCF needed five wins to earn the rings. The Knights defeated  No. 12 seed Rice, fourth-seeded Houston, top seed Southern Methodist University and lastly, No. 3 seed Southern Mississippi en route to the crown.

Prior to UCF, Hughey worked at the University of South Carolina during the 2007-08 season, helping to secure the No. 7 recruiting class in the nation for the Gamecocks. From 2004-07, Hughey worked as the recruiting coordinator at South Carolina State University.

Before hitting the college circuit, Hughey developed several Division I players as an assistant varsity boys coach at W. J. Kennan High School in Columbia, S.C. (2001-04). Hughey also worked as a scholastic coach at C.A. Johnson Preparatory Academy and Alcorn Middle School, both in South Carolina.

Hughey spent three years attending South Carolina State before earning his bachelor’s degree in liberal arts from Limestone College in December 2006. He attended C.A. Preparatory Academy, where he was a three-year basketball letterwinner – winning the State Championship during his senior season. He also lettered in football (at quarterback) and cross country.

He is married to the former Alethea Barnes, a 1994 graduate of the University of South Carolina. He has two daughters, Sanabarabara and Rhonda.
