NEW YORK, N.Y. (October 22, 2009) - The Rutgers women's basketball team was selected sixth in the 2009-10 BIG EAST Preseason Coaches' Poll, it was announced on Thursday at the league’s annual media day at ESPN Zone in New York City.
The Scarlet Knights received 156 points overall. It is the lowest preseason ranking for Rutgers since 2002-03 when the squad received a sixth-place league preseason prediction. That team would conclude the season in second place in the BIG EAST.
Senior Brittany Ray (Bronx, N.Y.) was named Preseason All-BIG EAST Honorable Mention. The guard was second on team a year ago in points (10.2), ranked third in assists (2.0) and fourth in rebounding (3.8). Ray led the team in three-pointers with 49, raising her career total to 123 which ranks sixth all-time in the RU record book.
Rutgers recorded a 21-13 overall record last season, advancing to fifth straight NCAA Tournament Sweet Sixteen appearance. The streak is the second-longest in the nation. RU concluded the 2008-09 conference regular season slate with a 9-7 mark.
The Scarlet Knights will play 14 NCAA Tournament qualifiers this winter, which includes six fellow BIG EAST members. In addition, nine squads on the slate were participants in the 2009 Women’s National Invitation Tournament.
Rutgers fans can get an early look at the women's squad at the annual “Meet the Team” event on Sunday, Oct. 25 at the Louis Brown Athletic Center. The event is free and open to the public. Fans will get their first chance to meet the Scarlet Knights, and will be treated to drills and a scrimmage, followed by an autograph session. The doors will open at 12:00 p.m. Festivities begin at 12:30 with the introduction of players and coaches. The Rutgers Pep Band and Cheerleaders will be in attendance.
