PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Nov. 21, 2009) – The Rutgers women’s basketball team hits the road for the first time this season, traveling to Athens, Ga. to take on No. 16/22 Georgia on Sunday, Nov. 22. Game time is set for 2:30 p.m.
The contest will be broadcast on WRSU, 88.7 FM and can be heard via www.scarletknights.com.
The Scarlet Knights trail in head-to-head meetings with the Lady Bulldogs, 7-3. Meeting for the 11th time in program history, RU is 0-2 in Athens versus UGA. The last trip to play Georgia on its home court came in 2003 in NCAA Tournament play.
RU is 20-34 all-time versus members of the SEC but have never won on the road against a SEC team. The Knights have faced at least one SEC opponent each season since 2002.
Senior guard Brittany Ray (Bronx, N.Y.) paces the team in seven categories, including scoring (15.7), assists (3.7) and steals (2.7) per contest. Sophomore April Sykes (Starkville, Miss.) is second in scoring, averaging 12 points per game. She erupted for 16 points in RU’s last contest, a 59-53 win over Boston College on Thursday.
Georgia won on the road at Chattanooga, 74-57, on Thursday evening. Freshman Jasmine James had 25 points and senior Ashley Houts added 21.
Rutgers head coach C. Vivian Stringer and Georgia head coach Andy Landers are two of the winningest coaches in women’s basketball with a combined 1,636 victories. They are ranked second and fifth among active head coaches in total wins. GAME NOTES
