SEATTLE (December 14, 2009) – Former Rutgers standout Chelsea Newton was selected by the Seattle Storm in the WNBA Dispersal Draft Monday.
The 5-11 guard has averaged 5.1 points, 1.8 rebounds and 1.6 assists in five WNBA seasons with two squads. She helped lead Sacramento to the 2005 WNBA title. Newton is currently playing in Italy for Liomatic Umbertide, averaging 13.5 points and 5.2 rebounds per game.
The 2005 BIG EAST Conference Defensive Player of the Year, Newton started 95 of 104 games in a Scarlet Knights’ uniform. She averaged 9.5 points, 4.3 rebounds and 2.3 assists over her four-year collegiate career.
Newton was selected by the Monarchs in the second round (22nd overall) of the 2005 WNBA Draft and was later acquired by the Chicago Sky in the 2005 WNBA Expansion Draft. She returned to the Monarchs in 2007 as a result of trade for Sacramento’s first-round draft pick.
