FAIRFIELD, CONN. — (September 22, 2012) – The Rutgers men’s cross country team finished second in a seven-team field at the 36th Annual Father Leeber S.J. Invitational Saturday afternoon in Fairfield, Conn. The Scarlet Knights earned 54 points in the meet, finishing behind host school Fairfield University for the second year in a row.
However, the second-place team finish did not come without improvement. RU scored 43 fewer points than it did in last year’s meet and finished a spot higher, while a number of runners improved their times from a year ago.
Freshman Chris DeFabio (Millington, N.J.) led the way for the Scarlet Knights, earning fifth place in the 68-runner field with a time of 26:34. DeFabio cut his time down by 1:06 since last season, placing eight spots better in the process.
Sophomore Curtis Richburg (West Orange, N.J.) was the next RU runner to place, completing the 8K course in 27:12 to finish 12th. Richburg also improved his standing from last year’s meet, cutting 1:29 off his time and jumping 21 spots. Just behind him in 13th place was Jaimin Vekaria (Clinton, N.J.), who clocked in at 27:12.
Freshman Anthony Horton (Moorestown, N.J.) and Daniel Lee (Plainsboro, N.J.) rounded out the top five for the Scarlet Knights. Horton completed the course in 27:45 to earn 17th place, while Lee finished just behind him in 18th place with a time of 27:53.
RU will enjoy two weeks off before competing in the Metropolitan Championships on Friday, Oct. 5 in the Bronx, N.Y.
