PISCATAWAY, N.J. (October 3, 2012) – The men’s and women’s cross country teams head to the Bronx, N.Y., Friday Oct. 5 to compete in a 13-team field the 2012 Metropolitan Championships, held in Van Cortland Park. Both squads look to improve their marks from a year ago, when the women finished second overall and the men placed sixth.
Sophomore Briana Deming (Webster, N.Y.) will attempt to capture her second consecutive individual Metropolitan Championship, as she completed the course in 18:05 to top the competition last season.
The women’s team will compete for the first time after winning the Monmouth Invitational on Sept. 15. RU had four top-10 finishers in that meet, as sophomore Ashley Deckert (Newfield, N.J.) paced the Scarlet Knights with a second-place finish, clocking in at 18:31.7. Junior captain Jenifer Spitzer (Fairport, N.Y.) finished just behind Deckert in sixth place with a time of 18:54.6.
The men’s squad enters the meet fresh off a second-place finish, it coming at the Father Leeber S.J. Invitational on Sept. 22. Freshman Chris DeFabio (Millington, N.J.) earned fifth place in the 68-runner field, while sophomore Curtis Richburg (West Orange, N.J.) was the next RU to place, finishing 12th overall.
Competing in the event are Columbia, which won both titles last season, Farleigh Dickinson, Fordham, Hofstra, Iona, Manhattan, Seton Hall, NYU, St. Francis-New York, Southern Connecticut State, St. Peter’s and Wagner.
