STATE COLLEGE, PA – The Rutgers University women’s cross-country opened its 2002 season with a fifth-place finish at the Penn State Invitational in State College. Senior Julie Culley (Lebanon, NJ) led RU with a second-place finish, clocking 21:28, which was just :18 off the pace of first-place finisher Tracy Brauksieck, who finished the course in 21:10.

Culley posted her second-best time at Penn State, just shy of her 21:05 mark registered at the 2000 District II Championships. The 21:05 mark is the ninth-best ever in the history of the course.

Penn State took top team honors with 22 points, while Bucknell finished second with 82. Alleghany (137), Dickinson (153) and Rutgers (159) rounded out the top five.

Freshman Belmax DeJesus (Stanhope, NJ) was the next RU finisher, taking 32nd with a time of 23:32. Claire Tafelski (Westfield, NJ) was 52nd at 24:00, while teammate Julie Delimon (Stanhope, NJ) was right beyond in 53rd at 24:01. The final RU scorer was freshman Stacey Mulchal (Jermyn, PA), who placed 56th with a time of 24:06.

“I thought we performed well for the first meet of the season,” said head coach Roberta Anthes. “The team was very fatigued coming into the meet, but we posted some good times. Hopefully, we will peak at the right time, but this is definitely a positive sign.”
