Rutgers Cross Country Competes At Iona College Meet Of Champions

BRONX, N.Y.  – The Rutgers men’s and women’s cross country teams competed in their second meet of the 2009 season at the Br. John “Paddy” Doyle/Iona College Meet of Champions on Saturday, Sept. 19, in Van Cortlandt Park. A total of 21 teams competed on each side with the men’s squad placing 11th, while the women finished 10th overall.

The Rutgers men tallied 237 points and the women amassed 268 points to earn their respective finishes. Kent State (59) won the men’s side, followed Wisconsin (74) and Malone University (139) in third. On the women’s end, Harvard took the top spot with 44 points, followed by Penn (62) and Wisconsin (130).
 
Junior Nick Miehe (Elmwood Park, N.J.) led the pack for the Scarlet Knight men as he completed the 8k race in 26:09.23 to finish 23rd. Classmate Kevin Cronin (Linwood, N.J.) took 32nd in 26:21.56, followed by back-to-back finishes from senior Jayram Sataluri (Holmdel, N.J.) and Taylor Burmeister (Highland Park, N.J.) who placed 68th and 69th, respectively in times of 27:16.19 and 27:17.35. Senior Simon Gordonov (East Windsor, N.J.) rounded out the scoring as he crossed the finish line in 27:35.98 to take 87th.
 
Leading the women’s team was sophomore Kelly Flannigan (Middletown, Conn.) who completed the 6k race in 26th place in 24:01.20. Joining her amongst the group of scorers for the Scarlet Knights were sophomore Kristen Johnson (Middletown, N.J.) (50th, 24:28.24), freshman Elise Brevet (Metuchen, N.J.) (57th, 24:36.71), junior Asha Singh (Flemington, N.J.) (66th, 24:51.21) and freshman Jennifer Spitzer (Fairport, N.Y.) (69th, 24:58.71).
 
Rutgers will return to action on Friday, Oct. 2, for the Paul Short Invitational on the campus of Lehigh.
