Nick Miehe
BRONX, N.Y. (October 9, 2009) – Rutgers junior Nick Miehe (Elmwood Park, N.J.) took top honors at the 2009 Metropolitan Championships, leading the Scarlet Knights men’s cross country team to a second-place showing overall on Friday afternoon at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx, N.Y. The women’s squad also posted a runner-up finish at the meet which featured 13 teams competing on the men’s side and 14 schools for the women.
Miehe paced the field, completing the 8k race in 25:45, finishing ahead of the other 125 runners. It was Miehe’s best finish of the season on the course at Van Cortlandt Park, after taking second in the season opener at Fordham.
Teammate Kevin Cronin (Linwood, N.J.) joined Miehe among the top-10 finishers as he crossed the line next for the Scarlet Knights, placing fifth in a time of 26:14. Graduate student Taylor Burmeister (Highland Park, N.J.) took 15th in 26:42, while seniors Jayram Sataluri (Holmdel, N.J.) and Michael Crum (Andover, N.J.) rounded out the scoring finishing 17th (26:50) and 25th (27:00), respectively.
On the women’s side, sophomore Kelly Flannigan (Middletown, Conn.) helped propel the Scarlet Knights as she finished second overall with a time of 18:22. Junior Asha Singh (Flemington, N.J.) placed 12th in 18:48, while freshman Jennifer Spitzer (Fairport, N.Y.) also finished among the top-15, taking 14th in 19:00.
Freshmen Elise Brevet (Metuchen, N.J.) and Victoria Pontecorvo (Staten Island, N.Y.) added to the Scarlet Knights’ point total, finishing 15th and 17th, respectively. Brevet recorded a time of 19:14, followed by Pontecorvo in 19:17.
The Rutgers men will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 17 for the Lafayette Invitational and both squads will then travel to Kenosha, Wisc. for the BIG EAST Championship on Saturday, Oct. 31.
