In June 2011 William H. Montanaro joined the Rutgers Athletic Development team as Director of Development, Major Gifts. Reporting to the Associate Athletic Director for Development, the Director of Athletic Development position focuses on securing major gifts related specifically to priorities in athletics and the sale/re-sale of premium seating at all Rutgers Athletics venues. Will’s major gift fundraising priorities in athletics include but are not limited to capital projects, scholarships, and operational support. In addition Will’s position will be responsible for the on-going cultivation and stewardship of major gift prospects/donors and premium seats holders.
William’s duties and responsibilities include the ability to drive major gift support to Rutgers Athletics and will be responsible for gifts of $5K or more annually with a focus on donors who donate $10K or more annually. Will manages a portfolio of clients, providing first class customer service as well as professional and timely responses to solve problems. In addition Will manages facility projects as assigned and actively participates in the management of cultivation and stewardship events to increase giving to athletics. In addition he will act as a liaison to sport specific groups as assigned in addition to other duties assigned as needed.
Prior to Rutgers, Will was the Assistant Athletic Director for Development at Iona College in New Rochelle, NY. Appointed in August 2008, William served as the head of the Iona College Goal Club, the fundraising arm for Iona College's 21-sport NCAA Division I Athletics Program, coordinating all aspects of the Goal Club annual fund along with the Iona Gaels Capital Improvements Fund. During Will’s time as Assistant Athletic Director for Development, the Goal Club not only set new fundraising totals but also increased membership. Will coordinated three consecutive successful fiscal years, exceeding set Goal Club goals each year.
At Iona Will directed the cultivation, solicitation, and completion of several Capital Campaign Major Gift donations including the renovation and refurbishing of the Hynes Athletic Center East basketball / volleyball arena floor, Hynes Athletic Center naming opportunities, in addition to major gift completions towards specific programs. Will also planned and organized several annual athletic fundraising events including the highly-successful Goal Club Hall of Fame Golf Outing & annual Homecoming Fundraiser. Will assisted all athletics personnel with coordinating any alumni and development activities, including alumni games, alumni specific events, preseason-midseason-postseason team mailings, team specific outings, and camps and clinics. Will continued to develop and implement strategies for identification, cultivation and solicitation of prospective donors along with a continued effort to work with the Iona College Alumni Relations Office to foster relationships between athletics and the entire alumni community. Will strived to have an open communication system with the entire Iona College Athletics Department to ensure that all areas of athletic development and fundraising are synchronized. In addition to his role within the Goal Club Will was a member of numerous search committees for various coaching positions.
Also during his time at Iona will served as the Vice Chair of the Alumni Nominating Board serving to identify qualified alumni from the various constituencies of Iona’s alumni ranks who were interested in active service to the College and their fellow alumni through nomination for election to the Alumni Association Board of Directors. The Committee seeks individuals who will be engaged in the functioning of the Board and be active at Board Meetings, who will serve on or lead a Board Committee, and who will contribute to the financial well-being of the College within their means.
Will completed five years working for the Iona College athletics department after serving two years as the Assistant to the Athletic Director. In this role he was responsible for assisting former Director of Athletics Patrick Lyons with the day-to-day operations of the athletics department. Prior to graduation Will interned for the Iona College strength and conditioning office, overseeing all of Iona’s Division I programs.
Montanaro earned his bachelor's degree in Management from the Iona College Hagan School of Business in 2006 and completed his MBA degree in Management from Hagan in January 2008. Montanaro also completed an Electronic Commerce Certificate in January 2008 from the Hagan School of Business. As an undergraduate, Montanaro was a four-year letter winner and four-time MAAC All-Academic selection while serving as an outside linebacker on the Iona College football team. On the field, Montanaro had his finest season in Maroon & Gold as a senior recording 34 tackles, 3 tackles for loss, 1 interception, and 2 pass break ups while starting all 10 games for the team.
