PISCATAWAY, N.J. (September 29, 2012) –  Rutgers field hockey (5-6, 0-3) kicked off weekend play with a conference matchup against Villanova (5-5, 1-2) at Bauer Track and Field Complex on Saturday afternoon.  The Scarlet Knights fell to the Wildcats in a last minute goal, 2-1. Sophie Wright (Devizes, United Kingdom) scored RU’s lone goal of the day.

The first half of action saw RU dominate the field, with 10 shots and five penalty corners. Villanova had just two shots and two penalty corners, and the teams ended the half with the score sitting at zero.

In the first five minutes of second half action, Wright capitalized on a corner opportunity after receiving a sharp pass from Danielle Freshnock (Middletown, N.J.). After gaining composure, the midfielder seared a shot from the top of the circle and through the Wildcats defense, putting RU up, 1-0. Wright’s goal was her fourth, putting her at nine points on the season.

After much back and forth action, Villanova tied up the game as Amy Jackson found the back of the cage off a hard shotfrom the top left of the circle.

The RU defense proved to be a strong line, allowing just six shots on goal and recording two defensive saves. Despite their efforts, VU sophomore Leah High managed to sneak a goal past the line late in the 68th minute to put Villanova up, 2-1. This is the second time in the 2012 season that Rutgers has dropped a game in the last bout of play.

Rutgers is back in action to face Bucknell on Sunday at 1 p.m. Bucknell enters the weekend on a three game skid, after losses last weekend to No. 17 Michigan and Temple. Senior Taylor Siegrist (Madison, N.J.) is leading the Bison in both goals (six) and points (sixteen). She notched two goals in Bucknell’s 5-4 loss to Temple.

The Scarlet Knights last faced the Bison on Sept. 25, 2011, which resulted in a 3-1 victory for RU. This game will be featured on Rutgers RVision, available on http://www.ScarletKnights.com.
