PISCATAWAY, N.J. (September 30, 2012) – Rutgers field hockey (6-6) battled it out in a Sunday afternoon matchup with Bucknell (6-6), which led to a 4-3 overtime victory for the Scarlet Knights. RU is 2-2 in overtime games this season.

Danielle Freshnock (Middletown, N.J.), Cornelia Duffin (Moorestown, N.J.), Ali Stever (Ocean City, N.J.), and Lisa Patrone (Washington Township, N.J.) all recorded goals on the day.
The Scarlet Knights, who advanced to 5-0 all-time against the Bison, came out attacking to put up two goals in the first half.
Freshnock got RU on the board first as she took a diving shot off a pass from Duffin. The goal was Freshnock’s third of the season, and the assist was Duffin’s first.
In the 29th minute of play a ball was sent to the middle of the circle where Patrone gained control and sent a short pass to Duffin, who made a quick turn to slot a ball past the Bucknell keeper. RU’s defense kept Bucknell shut out for the half, allowing just four shots from the BU offense.
In second half action, Bucknell came out with a quick goal from Leigh Hillman who connected with Maggie Murphy to put the first points on the board for the Bison. Shortly after, Kayla Sullivan shot a high ball in the 41st minute past the RU line to tie the game at two.
Rutgers struck back as Patrone blasted a long pass from the left side to freshman defender Stever who knocked a hard shot to the back of the cage, putting RU up, 3-2. The goal was Stever’s first shot and first goal of the season, and the assist was Patrone’s third.
With RU up by one goal, Bucknell’s Tayler Siegrist took advantage of a corner opportunity in the 68th minute, as she grabbed a pass from Amie Pritchard and sent it from the top of the circle to the back of the cage.
As the second half finished in a tie, the teams set up for a 7-on-7 overtime. In the second minute of overtime, freshman playmaker Alyssa Bull (Oakville, Ontario) sent a ball from the outside to Patrone who found a hole to the back of the cage, taking home the 4-3 win for Rutgers. Bull is tied with Freshnock to lead the team in assists with four. Patrone not only leads the team in points (13), but her game winning goal is her fifth of the season, both a season and career high.
The RU defense was especially aggressive in the nonconference matchup, as Laura Rose (Washington Township, N.J.) and Ashley Yanek (Northampton, Pa.), both made impressive efforts on all sides of the ball. The back line showed made a huge presence, allowing just four shots on goal and producing smart plays from clean tackles. In addition to the goal from backline freshman Stever, Rose recorded the first shot of her career.
RU opens October play next Friday at 7 p.m. with a BIG EAST matchup against Georgetown in College Park, Md.
