PISCATAWAY, N.J. (May 21, 2013) – Rutgers field hockey head coach Meredith Long, assistant coach Wesley Drew, and rising senior Scarlet Knight Lisa Patrone (Washington Township, N.J.) earned spots on the New Jersey regional team, and are three of the 108 athletes participating in the 2013 Women’s National Championship in Norfolk, Va., May 23-29.
Some of the best field hockey players in the nation will compete for the title of regional champions, but far more importantly contend for a spot on the U.S. Women’s National Team roster. Head coach Craig Parnham will be evaluating matches and selecting outstanding players from the pool of participants to represent Team USA on the international stage.
“The Women’s National Championship is the first opportunity for me to see all of the players in one place and that is really quite exciting,” said Parnham. “It is very important for me to have a good look at every player at the tournament.”
Twenty four (24) players will be selected by Parnham for the U.S. National Team, which is less than 25 percent of the players competing.
Long and Drew were instrumental members of the Senior Indoor Squad that won the ArminenTurnier RohrMax Cup after three days of competitive international play in Perchtoldsdorf, Austria in January. The win marked the first-ever gold for the U.S. National Indoor team on the international level. The RU coaches also competed in Buenos Aires, Argentina in March in a series of matches against competitors from Argentina, Argentina U19 and Uruguay.
