PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Aug. 7, 2013) – The Rutgers field hockey team received the 2012-13 Big East Team Academic Excellence Award, the conference announced Wednesday. The squad was recognized for having the highest collective grade-point average (GPA) among league teams in its sport.
“For Rutgers field hockey to be presented with the Big East Team Excellence Award, it is testament to how hard the team works, both on and off the field,” said head coach Meredith Long. “I'm immensely proud that my players have been recognized for their impressive academic achievements and they should be proud, too.”
The Scarlet Knights posted a 3.531 team GPA in 2012-13. The winners were chosen based on the GPA of each student-athlete who appeared on an institution’s roster as of the last contest of the championship segment in each conference-sponsored sport.
In addition, 18 members of last year’s squad were named to the 2012-13 Big East All-Academic Team, including Alyssa Bull (Oakville, Ont.), Katie Champion (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.), Cornelia Duffin (Moorestown, N.J.), Danielle Freshnock (Middletown, N.J.), Carley Hawkins (Harrisburg, Pa.), Nicole Imbriaco (Clark, N.J.), Ilanna Kowski (Washington, N.J.), Vickie Lavell (Haddon Township, N.J.), Lisa Patrone (Sewall, N.J.), Kaitlyn Plouse (Hummelstown, Pa.), Laura Rose (Washington Township, N.J.), Carlie Rouh (Berlin, N.J.), Jenn Staab (Marmora, N.J.), Alicia Stever (Ocean City, N.J.), Emily Strong (Medford, N.J.), Sarah Stuby (Roxbury, N.J.), Sophie Wright (Devizes, United Kingdom) and Ashley Yanek (Northampton, Pa.).
To be named to the all-academic team, the conference required a student-athlete to attain a minimum GPA of 3.00 for the preceding academic year, and complete a minimum of two consecutive semesters or three consecutive quarters of academic work, with a total of 18 semester or 27 quarter credits, not including remedial courses.
