PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Sept. 27, 2013) – The Rutgers field hockey team dropped a hard-fought 2-1 contest to No. 17 Temple in Philadelphia, Pa., Friday. Freshman Sofia Walia (Surrey, British Columbia) posted the Scarlet Knights’ goal, while two other RU players posted points and three others recorded shots.
Rutgers fell to 3-5 on the season with a 0-2 mark in the BIG EAST. GK Sarah Stuby (Roxbury, N.J.) tallied eight saves. The Owls moved to 7-2 and 2-0 in conference play. For the Scarlet Knights, freshman Devon Freshnock (Middletown, N.J.) and sophomore Katie Champion (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) each posted a shot on goal, while senior Lisa Patrone (Washington Township, N.J.) also recorded a shot.
Walia scored the first goal just 8:27 into the contest on a direct corner with assists from freshman Ashpal Bhogal (Leeds, England) and junior Jenn Staab (Marmora, N.J.). It was Walia’s second goal of the season.
At the 13:58 mark in the first half, Temple’s Katie Foran knotted the score at 1-1. Foran scored the game-winning goal for the Owls 2:27 into the second half.
The Scarlet Knights continue play at Lafayette in Easton, Pa., at 2 p.m. on Sunday.
