PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Oct. 4, 2013) – The Rutgers field hockey team notched a thrilling shootout victory over Villanova, 3-2, in Villanova, Pa., Friday. The Scarlet Knights received goals from junior Sophie Wright (Devizes, United Kingdom) and freshman Sofia Walia (Surrey, British Columbia).
RU improved to 5-5 (1-2 BIG EAST), picking up its first conference victory of the season. The Wildcats fell to 3-8 (0-3 BIG EAST). Rutgers posted 15 shots to Villanova’s eight and held an 18-5 advantage in penalty corners.
The Wildcats scored the first two goals of the game from Leah High and Maddy Harding.
Wright answered with her fifth score of the season on a shot from the top of the circle 22:41 into the contest. VU took a 2-1 lead into the half.
Still down by one with just 5:11 left in regulation, Walia knotted the contest on a penalty stroke. She posted five shots in the game and notched her third goal of the campaign.
The score remained 2-2 and went into overtime, remaining tied through the two extra periods to send the match to a shootout.
Freshman Ashpal Kaur Bhogal (Leeds, England), senior Danielle Freshnock (Middletown, N.J.) and senior Laura Rose (Washington Township, N.J.) each found the back of the cage in the shootout to give RU the victory. Freshman GK Shevaun Hayes (Melbourne, Australia) let just one Villanova shot into the goal on four attempts to secure the win.
The Scarlet Knights are back in action at No. 16 Drexel in Philadelphia on Sunday, Oct. 6 at 2 p.m.
