  • PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Nov. 8, 2013) – Rutgers field hockey junior midfielder Sophie Wright (Devizes, United Kingdom) and freshman back Sofia Walia (Surrey, British Columbia) were each named to the 2013 All-BIG EAST Second Team, the conference announced.

A captain, Wright started all 18 games in 2013 and finished as the leading scorer for the Scarlet Knights with nine goals and 19 points, both career bests. The junior also recorded one assist. Wright accumulated four points (two goals) in a single game twice this season, including vs. La Salle (Sept. 6) and Georgetown (Oct. 12). She was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Sept. 2 and Oct. 14.

“Sophie Wright has helped the team to one of the most successful seasons in recent history,” said head coach Meredith Long. “Her career-high goals, combined with her desire to win, make her a deserving recipient of this award.”

A freshman, Walia was a key defensive contributor for Rutgers this season, helping the Scarlet Knights hold opponents to just 1.83 goals per game. In her first season, Walia started all 18 contests and totaled three goals and three assists, including a two assist performance vs. the Georgetown (Oct. 12). In the same game, the back helped RU hold the Hoyas to zero shots. The Surrey, British Columbia, native recorded goals vs. Siena (Sept. 14), at Temple (Sept. 27) and at Villanova (Oct. 4).

“Since joining us, Sofia Walia has exceeded expectations and made a major impact on the team,” said Long. “I am very happy she joined the squad this year and I am excited to watch her continue to grow.”

With the help of Wright and Walia, Rutgers put together a 9-9 record in 2013, the best mark since the 2008 team went 14-6.
