PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Nov. 19, 2013) – Rutgers field hockey junior midfielder Sophie Wright (Devizes, United Kingdom) and freshman back Sofia Walia (Surrey, British Columbia) were each named to the 2013 Longstreth/NFHCA Division I All-Mid-Atlantic Region Second Team, it was announced Tuesday.
A captain, Wright started all 18 games in 2013 and finished as the leading scorer for the Scarlet Knights with nine goals and 19 points, both career bests. The junior also recorded one assist. Wright accumulated four points (two goals) in a single game twice this season, including vs. La Salle (Sept. 6) and Georgetown (Oct. 12). She was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Sept. 2 and Oct. 14.
A freshman, Walia was a key defensive contributor for Rutgers this season, helping the Scarlet Knights hold opponents to just 1.83 goals per game. In her first season, Walia started all 18 contests and totaled three goals and three assists, including a two assist performance vs. the Georgetown (Oct. 12). In the same game, the back helped RU hold the Hoyas to zero shots. The Surrey, British Columbia, native recorded goals vs. Siena (Sept. 14), at Temple (Sept. 27) and at Villanova (Oct. 4).
With the help of Wright and Walia, Rutgers put together a 9-9 record in 2013, the best mark since the 2008 team went 14-6. The two were also named the 2013 All-BIG EAST Second Team.
