PISCATAWAY, N.J. (April 27, 2013) – Led by 222 yards passing and three touchdowns from junior QB Gary Nova (Elmwood Park, N.J.), the Scarlet downed White 57-19 at High Point Solutions Stadium on Saturday. Senior WR Quron Pratt (Palmyra, N.J.) caught two touchdown passes from Nova.
The highlight of the day was the final five minutes of the game as 16 children affected by Hurricane Sandy played flag football on the field. As Rutgers’ players coached their respective squad, the kids from sixth to eighth grade totaled five touchdowns in the closing minutes.
An estimated crowd of 21,000 were in attendance at the Scarlet-White game and were given the option to make a $5 donation to the Hurricane Sandy New Jersey Relief Fund upon entering the gates. Rutgers wore special helmets with the R Strong logo.
The team wore jerseys with 90 names of towns across New Jersey that were affected by Hurricane Sandy. Each jersey will then be signed by Kyle Flood and given toeach town later this spring and summer.
Rutgers Athletics sold over $61,000 worth of R Strong t-shirts since the fall of 2012. In addition, Scarlet Fever in downtown New Brunswick, who partnered with Rutgers Athletics, sold almost $87,000 with all the proceeds from the combined effort going to the Hurricane Sandy New Jersey Relief Fund.
Junior RB Savon Huggins (Jackson, N.J.) led all players with 68 yards rushing, while Pratt’s 83 yards receiving were a game-high. Defensively, true freshman LB L.J. Liston (Grand Blanc, Mich) tallied a game-best nine tackles as a member of the White squad.
Scarlet opened up its scoring early in the first, as Nova connected with Pratt for a 25-yard score with 10:35 on the clock. A late field goal by sophomore PK Nick Borgese (Hamburg, N.Y) gave Scarlet a 10-0 lead heading into the second stanza.
At the 9:22 mark in the second, Nova found Pratt again, this time for 26 yards, to give Scarlet a 17-0 lead. A 24-yard fumble return to pay dirt by CB Ian Thomas (Baltimore Md.) and a 10-yard rushing touchdown from Huggins gave the Scarlet squad a 31-0 advantage at the break.
Set up by a 49-yard toss to junior WR Miles Shuler (Long Branch, N.J.), Nova found sophomore WR Leonte Carroo (Edison, N.J.) for a 19-yard scoring strike in the third quarter, giving Scarlet a 38-0 lead heading into the final period.
Sophomore TE Tyler Kroft (Downingtown, Pa.) caught a 12-yard touchdown pass from senior QB Chas Dodd (Lyman, S.C.) to close out the game’s scoring prior to the flag football finale.
