PHILADELPHIA (July 8, 2013) – Rutgers senior linebacker Jamal Merrell (Bear, Del.) earned a spot on the 2013 Bednarik Award watch list, the Maxwell Football Club announced Monday. The Bednarik Award has been presented to the College Defensive Player of the Year since 1995.
It is the third preseason honor for Merrell, who also was named Phil Steele Preseason Second Team All-American Athletic Conference and Athlon Preseason All-Conference Third Team. He recorded 83 total tackles, 8.5 for loss and two blocked kicks in 13 starts as the strongside linebacker last season. Merrell picked up double-digit stops against Howard, Arkansas and Louisville.
The Bednarik Award is named after Chuck Bednarik, a former standout at Penn and with the Philadelphia Eagles. He is a member of both the College Football Hall of Fame's Class of '69 and the NFL Hall of Fame's Class of '67. The watch list of 75 student-athletes will be narrowed down to semifinalists Oct. 29 and finalists Nov. 25 before the winner is announced Dec. 12 as part of the Home Depot College Football Awards.
The watch list candidates have been chosen by the Maxwell Football Club's selection committee, which analyzes both past performance and future potential. The Club reserves the right to make additions and deletions to these lists as the 2013 season unfolds. All members of the Maxwell Football Club, NCAA sports information directors, FBS head coaches and selected national media are eligible to vote for the awards.
Khaseem Greene and Logan Ryan represented the Scarlet Knights on the Bednarik Award watch list in 2012.
