HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, FL – The Rutgers University men’s golf team is in 18th place with a 634 (313-321) team score after day one of the Mission Inn Spring Spectacular, played Saturday on the par 72, 7,230-yard Las Colinas golf course at the historic Mission Inn Resort. Junior Doug Walters (Blairstown, N.J.) led the Scarlet Knights, carding a 155 (78-77) to head into Sunday’s final round tied for 61st in the 116-player field.
The 54-hole event features 18 teams and marks the first event of the spring season for RU. George Mason is the tournament host. The field also features Appalachian State, Florida Atlantic, Hartford, Indiana, Georgia State, Marquette, Morehead State, Murray State, Northern Illinois, ODU, Purdue, Stetson, Towson, Connecticut, Virginia Tech and Western Illinois.
Sophomore Jacob Stockl (Clark, N.J.), junior Jonathan Renza (Cortland Manor, N.Y.) and freshman Louis Bodine (Flemington, N.J.) joined Walters among the top 100. Stockl is tied for 72nd with a 157 (76-81), Renza is tied for 94th with a 161 (79-82) and Bodine is also tied for 94th with a 161 (80-81).
Freshman Jonathan Chang (Valencia, Calif.) rounded out the Scarlet scorecard with a 181 (95-86).
A pair of B1G teams lead the tournament. Purdue is first with a 577, with Indiana one stroke behind at 578.
