SOUTH KENT, Conn. (Sept. 24, 2013) – Rutgers men’s golf carded an 868 (296-288-284) to win the 17-team Hartford Hawks Invitational, played Monday and Tuesday at Bull’s Bridge Golf Club, by nine strokes. Senior Doug Walters (Blairstown, N.J.) carded a four-under par 212 (72-68-72) to finish tied for second in the 96-player field, as all five RU competitors placed among the top 21 entries.
“It was a true team win,” said Rutgers head coach Rob Shutte. “All five guys contributed and we improved with every round in tough conditions. “A week ago, we were sitting on a lead entering the final round and finished third. Using that experience to earn this victory shows maturity and that is a plus moving forward.”
Walters was minus five in par five scoring, minus three in par three scoring and had 14 birdies.
Sophomore Jonathan Chang (Valencia, Calif.) and freshman Michael Howe (Temecula, Calif.) joined Walters in the top 20. Chang was minus four in par five scoring and had 10 birdies en route to a 222 (76-71-75) and an 11th place finish. Howe had two eagles and eight birdies to his credit to finish tied for 17th with a 224 (80-76-68).
Junior Jacob Stockl (Clark, N.J.), coming off a victory at the Rutgers Invitational, and senior Jonathan Renza (Cortland Manor, N.Y.) both placed tied for 21st with 226 totals. Stockl had 34 pars. Renza carded a 69 on Tuesday and registered 33 total pars.
Tournament host Hartford secured second place with an 877 scorecard. UConn finished in the show position with an 890. Hartford’s Evan Russell captured individual medalist honors with a nine-under 207 (74-63-70).
The tournament victory marked the first for the Scarlet Knights since they won the Rutgers Invitational in September 2009. The last tournament win for the Scarlet Knights outside of Piscataway was the Princeton Invitational in April 2009.
Rutgers returns to the links Sept. 29-Oct. 1 at the Badger Invitational in Madison, Wisc.
