Bethlehem, Pa. – Rutgers men’s golf is in first place with a 305 score after the opening round of the seven-team Lehigh Invitational, played Sunday on the Grace Course at Saucon Valley Country Club. Senior Jonathan Renza (Cortland Manor, N.Y.) is atop the leaderboard after carding an even par 72 to pace the Scarlet Knights and the 45-player field.
Renza is a tournament-best minus three in par five scoring and has three birdies and 12 pars to his credit.
Senior Doug Walters (Blairstown, N.J.) is in second place with a two-over 74. Walters has an event-best five birdies and is minus two in par five scoring.
All of Rutgers’ competing five are among the top 20 competitors after 18 holes. Freshman Michael Howe (Temecula, Calif.) is tied for 10th with a 79, junior Jacob Stockl (Clark, N.J.) is tied for 12th with an 80 and sophomore Jonathan Chang (Valencia, Calif.) is tied for 18th with an 81.
Host Lehigh is in second place, eight strokes behind the Scarlet Knights with a 313. Villanova is in the show position with a 317.
The Invitational, presented by B Braun, concludes Monday. The final 18 holes will begin with a shotgun start at 10:30 a.m. due to expected frost.
