ELLINGTON, Conn. – The Rutgers men’s golf team placed seventh with a 909 (302-304-303) total at the inaugural Connecticut Cup, played Monday and Tuesday at Ellington Ridge Country Club. Senior James Arbes (Westfield, N.J.) paced the Scarlet Knights and placed tied for fifth overall in the 68-player field with a 221 (76-74-71).
Arbes carded a 71 on Tuesday to improve eight spots from the position he held after the initial two rounds. He registered 39 pars in the event, the second highest total of the tournament.
Senior Jimmy Hilaire (Fishkill, N.Y) also played well on the par 72, 6,936-yard course, carding a 75 on Tuesday to finish tied for 23rd with a 228 total. The rest of the team scorecard was comprised of seniors Jordan Gibbs (Princeton, N.J.) and Ben Bershad (Titusville, N.J.), as well as sophomore Andrew Tursky (Hillsborough, N.J.). Gibbs placed 27th with a 229 (77-75-77), Bershad finished tied for 36th with a 233 (75-78-80) and Tursky placed tied for 48th with a 236 (75-80-81).
Linus Gillgren of Arkansas-Little Rock carded a three-under par 69 Tuesday to capture the individual title, while also leading the Trojans to the team championship. UALR shot a team total of four-over 868 for the three rounds to easily outdistance runner-up Bryant by 22 strokes in the 13-team event.
Hartford followed UALR and Bryant in the top three, while host Connecticut, Sacred Heart and American International tied for fourth place.
