PISCATAWAY, N.J. – The Rutgers women’s golf team is in second place with a 304 total after the opening round of the 21-team Rutgers Invitational, played Friday at the Rutgers University Golf Course. Senior Brittany Weddell (Buzzards Bay, Mass.) is tied for 2nd in the 119-player field after carding a one-over par 73 on the 6,304-yard course.
“I’m pleased with the way we played today,” said head coach Maura Ballard. “We stayed focused. I’m confident that we can elevate our level of play tomorrow and make run for the team title.”
Weddell has a tournament-best 17 pars and is even in par four scoring.
Sophomore Kortnie Maxoutopoulis (Pleasanton, Calif.) complemented Weddell by shooting a 76 to sit tied for eighth. She is minus one in par four scoring with 14 pars.
Freshman Gabrielle Sacheli (Pittsford, N.Y.), playing among RU’s top five for the first time in her collegiate career, also turned in a strong performance. She posted a 77 through 18 to tie for 12th.
Freshman Melanie Chambers (Henderson, Nev.) and senior Karen Cash (Allendale, N.J.) comprise the rest of the team scorecard. Chambers is tied for 23rd with a 78, while Cash is tied for 57th with an 82.
Seton Hall paces the field with a 299, five strokes ahead of the host Scarlet Knights. St. John’s is in third place with a 312.
Seton Hall’s Christina Cantu is atop the leaderboard with an even par 72.
The second and final round begins Saturday morning with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start. Results will be posted on the athletics web site at the conclusion of the event.
