OCALA, FL – The Rutgers Women’s Golf Team placed 12th with a 943 (314-314-315) team score at the MSU Ocala Spring Invitational, played Sunday through Tuesday at the Juliette Falls Golf Resort. Freshman Samantha Moyal (Alameda, Calif.) turned in a strong performance in RU’s first event of the spring season, placing tied for 22nd in the 82-player field with a 229 (70-78-81) on the par 72, 6,113-yard course.
Senior Brittany Weddell (Buzzards Bay, Mass.) improved throughout the tournament and was the Scarlet Knights’ top performer on both Monday and Tuesday. In round three, she carded a 76, after a 77 on Monday and an 80 on Sunday, to finish tied for 40th place with a 233. She was minus one in par five scoring for the Invitational.
Freshmen Gabrielle Sacheli (Pittsford, N.Y.) and Melanie Chambers (Henderson, Nev.) also shot under 80 on Tuesday, posting 79’s against a very competitive field. Sacheli finished tied for 60th with a 240 (82-79-79), while Chambers placed 64th with a 241 (82-80-79).
Senior Karen Cash (Allendale, N.J.) rounded out the team scorecard. She finished 78th with a 252 (90-81-81).
Morehead State hosted the 54-hole tournament, which was comprised of 14 teams. Mercer captured the team title with an 883 (293-291-299), 13 strokes better than second place Stetson.
Rutgers, under the leadership of 21st-year head coach Maura Ballard, returns to the links for the Cincinnati Spring Invitational, to be held March 22-24 in Crystal River, Fla.
