INDIANAPOLIS (March 27, 2012) – Sophomore Alexis Gunzelman (Tabernacle, N.J.) has qualified for the NCAA Regionals, the governing body announced late Monday. The all-arounder will take part in the Raleigh [N.C.] Regional on Saturday, April 7 at 4 p.m. inside Reynolds Coliseum on the campus of North Carolina State University.

“Making Regionals is a pretty big accomplishment for an individual, it is not an easy thing to do,” said head coach Louis Levine. “It is really a payoff of all the hard work she puts in day in and day out in the gym. She can go in there and be competitive with anybody. If she can get in the gym these next two weeks and refine a few more things, she is going to be able to push everybody when we get there.

“We are really excited for her,” he continued. “It is a good thing to have representation once you get into the postseason and into Regionals. This is a continued step with our program to where we want to be. Hopefully this time next year we are taking our whole team out there to join her.”

Gunzelman posted a career-high 39.125 in the all-around Saturday at the East Atlantic Gymnastics League Championships in Pittsburgh to finish fifth, the highest-ever placing by a Scarlet Knight cumulatively at the Championships. The sophomore set a personal best on the floor exercise, scoring a 9.900 to finish in a tie for second amongst 48 competitors in the event. Additionally, she led the team tying for fourth on the balance beam with a 9.800 to go with a 9.775 on the vault to round out a superb day.

“I knew going into the meet on Saturday that if I had the type of meet that I’ve been having and competed the same way, Regionals were a good possibility,” said Gunzelman. “When I hit my score, I kind of knew I was going to make it. I feel like it is a great accomplishment to get this far, being able to help my team. It is a shame that I can’t share it with my teammates, but they’ll be there in spirit and I’ll be doing it for them.”

For the season, the sophomore recorded a 38.955 regional qualifying score (RQS) in the all-around, while finishing with an RQS of 9.770 in the vault, 9.775 on the uneven bars, 9.745 on the balance beam and 9.840 on the floor exercise.

Gunzelman earned First Team All-EAGL All-Around at the conference banquet last week, in addition to making Second Team All-Floor Exercise and All-Uneven Bars. She also took home the honor of EAGL Team MVP for the second-straight year.

Gunzelman is one of five all-around competitors at the predetermined Regional site who qualified as an individual. The top two teams and the next two highest all-around scores will qualify for the NCAA Nationals in Duluth, Ga.
