UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. (January 26, 2013) – Highlighted by a season-best score on the floor exercise, Rutgers gymnastics posted a competitive 193.225 team mark Saturday in a quad meet inside Rec Hall at Penn State. It was the second-highest score of the season for the Scarlet Knights and best on the road.
The host Nittany Lions won the meet with a total of 195.500, followed by Iowa (195.325), No. 22 Pittsburgh (193.575) and RU. Rutgers is now 4-5 on the season and 0-2 against East Atlantic Gymnastics League opponents.
“I thought it was a real competitive meet tonight,” head coach Louis Levine said. “We had some good moments but I felt like we left some points out there. We will just have to continue to move forward and get back in the gym and work.”
Starting the night on the floor exercise, the Scarlet Knights jumped out quick to a season-best mark of 48.850. Senior Danielle D’Elia (Colts Neck, N.J.) and freshman Katie Stebick (Waterford, Pa.) each registered a 9.825 to lead RU, while freshman Danielle Verdon (Freehold, N.J.) notched a 9.775. The scores were both career-highs for the two freshmen.
Vault saw the return of junior Luisa Leal (Cali, Columbia) to the lineup, who placed tied for fifth amongst 24 gymnasts in the event with a score of 9.775. It was the first meet for the former NCAA Regional qualifier since competing at Penn Jan. 20, 2012.
Freshman Jenna Williams (Bordentown, N.J.) continued the impressive start to her career with a team-leading 9.825 on the uneven bars, good for third overall. Already named EAGL Rookie of the Week earlier in the year, she has posted at least that score in all four meets in the event.
Junior Alyssa Straub (Nazareth, Pa.) recorded her best all-around score of the season (38.400), highlighted by a 9.725 on the floor exercise. She leads the team with three all-around performances in four meets.
RU will next return home to the Livingston Gym to host Brown, Southern Connecticut and Pitt in a quad meet Feb. 2 at 6 p.m.
