PISCATAWAY, N.J. (February 5, 2013) – Jenna Williams (Bordentown, N.J.) of the Rutgers gymnastics program has been named East Atlantic League Rookie of the Week, the league announced Tuesday. It is the second time this season the freshman has earned the honor.

“Jenna has been a really consistent performer on three events for us so far this season and obviously played a major role in our big score last weekend,” head coach Louis Levine said. “She has done a great job of staying within herself and repeating her routines over and over. Jenna has developed into someone we can count on.”

Williams helped the Scarlet Knights to their third-highest score (195.000) in program history and best since 2000 on Saturday in a quad meet victory. She continued her impressive rookie season with a pair of 9.825 scores on the uneven bars and the balance beam to go with a 9.725 on the vault. The beam mark netted her a tied for second finish, while placing tied for third on the bars.

For the season, Williams leads the competitive EAGL with an average of 9.835 on the uneven bars. She has posted either a 9.825 or 9.850 in the event in all five meets. The freshman has an average of 9.775 on the vault and 9.570 on the balance beam.

“Leading the EAGL in bars as a freshman says a lot,” Levine said. “She has the ability to repeat the same routine consistently to the point where you see the same thing every day. That is impressive for anyone, forget just being a freshman.”

Williams also earned the honor Jan. 8 after her collegiate debut at New Hampshire.

Rutgers will look to ride the momentum next week with a meet at Kent State Friday, Feb. 8 at 7 p.m. It is will be the first of third straight weekends away for the Scarlet Knights.
