  • PISCATAWAY, N.J. (March 6, 2013) – Fresh off putting up a school record team score, Rutgers gymnastics will head back on the road to face Towson in a dual meet Friday, March 8 at 7 p.m. inside the Towson Center. The Scarlet Knights have the 39th-best Regional Qualifying Score (RQS) in the nation (194.315), with the top 36 qualifying for the NCAA Regionals.

“We executed a lot of little thing we were working on last week, such as sticking vaults. It also helps not having to count any falls,” head coach Louis Levine said. “We just put on some nice finishing touches on what we have been working on and need to continue that this week. It will be important to stay consistent in order to reach our goal.”

On the way to the record 195.975 score, Rutgers set school-highs on both the vault (48.975) and the floor exercise (49.250). Junior Luisa Leal (Cali, Columbia) notched an individual program record 9.925 on vault, propelling to a 38.800 all-around mark. Classmate Alexis Gunzelman (Tabernacle, N.J.) had the best meet of her career, scoring a career-high 39.225 all-around to lead all competitors in the meet. She ranks third in the EAGL with an RQS of 9.825 on uneven bars.

This will be the second to final regular season meet before heading to the EAGL Championships at the University of North Carolina March 23. The Scarlet Knights are just 0.400 behind No. 36 Iowa State for the final NCAA spot, having posted three of its top five team scores in program history this season. The road high of 195.050 came at Maryland Feb. 17.

Towson is in their first season back in the EAGL after being an original charter member of the conference. The Tigers come into the weekend with an RQS of 192.800, scoring a season-high 194.675 last time out in a quad meet at New Hampshire. The team scored best on vault (48.750), led by a 9.825 from Samantha Ward. Head coach Vicki Chliszcyk is in her third season.
