DURHAM, N.H. (March 18, 2013) – Headlined by seniors Nicole Romano (Livingston, N.J.), Emma-Rose Trentacosti (Ridgefield Park, N.J.) and Jenna Zito (Rockaway, N.J.) all qualifying for the fourth time, 10 Rutgers gymnast earned a spot on a East Atlantic Gymnastics League All-Academic Team. The complete conference list was released Monday.
“This continues the tradition of academic excellence in the Rutgers gymnastics program,” head coach Louis Levine said. “We prioritize doing well in the classroom and I am happy to see 10 of our student-athletes named to the EAGL All-Academic Team.”
The trio of Romano, Trentacosti and Zito cap off their careers by making the All-Academic Team in each of their four years as a student-athlete. All have maintained at least a 3.0 GPA throughout their time at RU.
Juniors Alexis Gunzelman (Tabernacle, N.J.), Alexandria Ivol (Woolwich Township, N.J.), Luisa Leal (Cali, Columbia) and Alyssa Straub (Nazareth, Pa.) have also made it a 100 percent clip, earning distinction for the third time. Senior Danielle D’Elia (Colts Neck, N.J.) and sophomore Sara Skammer (Dallas, Pa.) both picked up the honor for the second time for the Scarlet Knights.
Freshman Claudia Salinas (Allendale, N.J.) met the requirements in her first collegiate year.
Overall, 89 gymnasts from the eight-member EAGL earned the distinction. In order to be named, student-athletes must have a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher. Freshmen are eligible if they earned a GPA of 3.0 or higher in the fall semester.
The All-EAGL Awards will be presented at the annual banquet on Friday, March 22 at the University of North Carolina, the site of this year’s EAGL Championships.
