BALTIMORE (March 12, 2014) – Freshman Claire Jones (Gaffney, S.C.) of the Rutgers gymnastics team repeated as the East Atlantic Gymnastics League Rookie of the Week in an announcement from the conference, as she also earned the honor last week. Jones recorded a 9.900 on the floor exercise and a 9.850 on the balance beam to help the Scarlet Knights set a new program team record (196.225) last Saturday in a five-team meet at the Livingston Recreation Center.
“It’s great to have Claire’s hard work and determination day-in and day-out being recognized by the conference after back-to-back great performances,” head coach Louis Levine said.
On Rutgers’ third event of the meet, Jones scored at least a 9.775 on the balance beam for the fourth-straight week with a 9.850. She has competed in the event in all 10 meets so far this season and holds a regional qualifying score of 9.780. As a team, the Scarlet Knights recorded a 49.000 on the balance beam Saturday.
Performing fifth in the lineup, Jones reached new levels with a career-high 9.900 on her floor exercise routine. The score was part of a school-record 49.325 in the event and tied for second-best from a Scarlet Knight this season on floor.
This is the third EAGL Rookie of the Week honor for Rutgers, as freshman April Baker (Andover, Mass.) received the award in week one. In all, Rutgers has totaled seven honors from the conference this season through nine weeks.
Rutgers is back in action Friday night at William & Mary in its final meet before the EAGL Championships. North Carolina and Brown will also take part, as RU is 17-2 this season.
