Modi, Abrams Lead Rutgers Gymnasts to Second-Place Finish vs. Pitt, Cornell

  • PISCATAWAY, NJ – The Rutgers women’s gymnastics team (10-6, 0-4 EAGL) finished second in a home tri-meet this afternoon in the Livingston Recreation Center. The Panthers of Pittsburgh placed first in the meet with a 193.950, followed by the Scarlet Knights with a 191.l325 and Cornell with a 187.200.

    The Scarlet Knights were led on vault by senior Kristen Marino (Hillsborough, NJ) and freshman Jamye Shelton (Griffin, GA) who tied for seventh place, scoring a 9.650. Senior Kamla Modi (Bayside, NY) took 10th with a 9.525, while Jessica Orlando (Erie, PA) finished 11th with a 9.500. Diandra O’Connor and Nathalie Sulpher of Pittsburgh tied for first place with a 9.775, followed by teammates Heather Launse and Alyse Zeffiro in third with a 9.725.

    On bars, Modi set a new career high with a 9.825 to take her first first-place finish of the season, tying with Pittsburgh’s Marcy Blitz. Sulpher rounded out the top three scorers in the event with 9.800 in third. RU junior Laura Iepson (Sweetwater, NJ) and sophomore Sveta Shterenberg (Sharon, MA) also set new personal marks with 9.750 scores in fifth place.

    The Scarlet Knights also took the beam title, with junior Lisa Abrams (Mt. Ephraim, NJ) scoring a 9.750 for first place, followed closely in second by teammate Caitlin Wight (Washington, PA) with a 9.725. The Panthers’ Zeffiro took third, scoring a 9.700, while Pitt’s Lisa Yarosh and Cornell’s Meghan Miller tied for fourth with a 9.625.

    Pitt’s Sulpher and Roslyn Singeton tied for first on floor, scoring a 9.875. There was a four-way tie for third place, with Rutgers’ Shterenberg and Wight and Pittsburgh’s Erika Goldberg and Launse all scoring 9.850’s. The Scarlet Knights also saw a top performance from freshman Erin Lynch (Mullica Hill, NJ), who tied for seventh with a 9.825.

    In the all-around competition, Sulpher narrowly defeated her teammate O’Connor, 38.150-38.100. Larissa Calka of Cornell placed third with a 37.825 while Nicci Bradder (Dover, NH) took fourth with a 36.525 for the Knights.

    Rutgers will return to action on Sunday, Feb. 16, when it heads to West Virginia to face the Mountaineers and No. 17 Penn State at 2 p.m. The Scarlet Knights will compete at home on Saturday, Feb. 22, hosting Bridgeport at 7 p.m.
